Pennsylvania Turnpike Crash Kills 5, Injures 60

January 15, 2020 by Robbins Law, P.C.

Hospital | Pennsylvania turn pike | Robbins Law

On January 5, 2020, a horrific multicar pileup on the Pennsylvania Turnpike killed five people and sent 60 more to the hospital. Three of the five killed in the accident were ejected from a bus that did not have seatbelts. The accident was a chain reaction that involved a tour bus, a FedEx truck, two UPS trucks, and a passenger vehicle. Victims were taken to five different area hospitals. According to the Associated Press (AP), Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo told WTAE, “I haven’t personally witnessed a crash of this magnitude in 20 years.” The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says it will be 18 to 24 months before it makes a final report on the crash.

Devastating Chain Reaction

The crash began when the tour bus struck the center barrier of the Turnpike, then veered right, up and embankment and rolled onto its side block all lanes of traffic. The bus was then struck by a FedEx truck and a UPS truck. There were two UPS drivers in the UPS truck, both were killed. A Mercedes hit the UPS truck and was then hit by a second UPS truck. Although the Mercedes was pinned between the two trucks, no one in the Mercedes or second UPS truck was injured.
